I applied for Sports Directs finance graduate scheme in April 2014 when I looked on their careers website whilst I was studying at University. I saw it as a great opportunity to join a FTSE100 company that is still young and heading in the right direction with growth year on year. I was successful with my application and attended an assessment day, this was a great experience as I got to meet current employees and ask them about their roles within Sports Direct. I was fortunate to be offered a place on the graduate scheme for two months in which I came first place and made my role permanent.
My role is a Financial Accountant and I have now been at Sports Direct for just over a year. I studied Business and Management at University so had little experience of Accounting beforehand but the company were more interested in my potential ability rather than what I already knew which was reassuring. The training I have received has been great, my colleagues have been very patient with me and I am now helping to train this year’s graduates to take on my role so I can progress further.
A brief description of my role is to manage the accounts of Sports Direct and its subsidiary companies by performing tasks such as intercompany recharges, accruals and prepayments, as well as producing a profit and loss on a monthly basis. I also produce various reports for numerous departments of the company such as store sales against target. I enjoy the variety of my role as each day I could have a different task which is challenging and keeps the job interesting.
My experience of Sports Direct so far has been great, the office atmosphere is relaxed and everybody is very friendly. As the office is open plan you get to meet people other than just in your department, for example there are many of us in the office that play football on a weekly basis which is a good laugh. I think it's a great time to be a part of Sports Direct as they are still growing and there are lots of opportunities if you put the effort in.
